Learning about the many ways to use a single grocery item isn’t just great for natural remedies and saving money. We’ve discovered that buying groceries that are versatile can also save time. It’s easier to grab one bottle when faced with 10 different scenarios at home, than it is to run from closet to pantry to drawer to find the right thing while your kids are calling for you and that pot of potatoes is boiling over. There are a bunch of great items to have on hand that will help simplify your day-to-day.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
This is a bit like a magic potion. Traditionally used in recipes like salad dressings, Apple Cider Vinegar is also great to drink with warm water in the mornings for an instant pH balance for your body and a wide range of other health benefits. It is also a great household product that can be used for cleaning the bathroom, soothing sunburns, giving your hair some shine and helping your cat or dog ward off fleas.
Buy your lemons in bulk. There are hundreds of great recipes that call for lemons or lemon juice, but we also love to toss a few slices in our water. It’s another way to balance your body’s pH and will also help aid in digestion. Plus, adding lemons to water will stave off that craving for juice. But did you know that there are a ton of other ways to use lemons around the house? Lemons can be used as a natural sanitizer for cleaning and deodorizing, beautifying cuticles and skin, and even brighten clothes in the laundry.
3. Coconut Oil
This natural oil is widely recognized for its health benefits in the kitchen. Try cooking with it instead of olive oil or canola oil as it has a low smoking point. It’s also a great source of healthy fats and antioxidants. But we’ve been excited about the other ways we can use it at home, especially as a beauty product. Coconut oil is a great moisturizer for the skin, can remove makeup, tame hair frizz, act as a shaving cream, prevent stretch marks during pregnancy and even remove makeup.
This healthy sweetener is delicious in smoothies, on toast and in tea, but honey also has some great health benefits because it is naturally antimicrobial. Drink warm water with lemon and honey to fight colds, stomach infections and soothe sore throats. It is also reported to calm the nervous system, so honey can be effective for insomnia and anxiety. Plus, it’s a skin softener as well.
5. Baking Soda
We all have a box of this in the back of our fridge, but make sure you also have another in your pantry. Baking soda has long been known to have multiple uses around the house. We use it as a silver polisher, stain remover, to refresh the carpet, unclog drains and mix it with water when we run out of toothpaste.
